I think guru might be a little strong, as that place was like one big technical problem after another. Part of my reason in mentioning it is because it was frequently down. I always got the sense from Chucky that he had twice the web knowledge as me, thought he had 3 times as much, and needed 4 times as much to keep that place running smooth. Touche. You were in contact with that crew (and in particular Chucky, who I never interacted with) more than me, so I easily take your word. And god damnit Foo, I said I "believe", not know, you come here just to break my nuts on lack of Chucky knowledge, gosh! Leave him as a pedo who wants to rape the soul of a child with voodoo weird talk for all I care! Here's the thing. We all know you're busy, but I think you know as much as we do, we can't do this without your help. I appreciate you coming in and sacrificing your time as is with great advice, and we're gonna need more. Lest we run the chance of creating a dumpster fire and you have to later drag all our charred bodies out. HMF will never leave my blood and ya'll are my family. I just want to see us avoid the pitfalls I learned over the years running stuff behind the scenes. Of course I will help. I wish we had 30 hour days so I could give you guys 6 of them.

If I recall, Fight-Evil had a Simple Machines forum. That is good to know. Seems like phpBB will be the easiest/best option for us. Plus side is there is a lot of other forum software out there that we can convert to if we hate it. (most I've come across with good reviews can convert from phpBB)

Is there an estimated cost for attempting to save the content first?

Is there an estimated cost for attempting to save the content first? what I wanted to try wouldn't cost anything. Odds of success wouldn't be very good but I wouldn't do what's there any harm cause I'd make a backup of everything first. With Mark's help odds would be a bit better, but I wouldn't hold your breath on us being successful with it either. To get a pro to do it would probably run into the low thousands at best.

Is there an estimated cost for attempting to save the content first? *Picard Facepalm* I think you are really overvaluing that content. When it was readily available, did you really search through it? I am sad our history is gone and in some ways feel responsible for it, but at some point we need to move forward. I have not said a whole lot about this but one of the reasons I am a little reluctant about saving the content is because of the PMs. Someone skilled enough to manipulate that data is also skilled enough to access the Private messages. When I was admin, I hated having the ability to become another user. It is a function that I never thought should exist, even though there were a couple times when I did it with a person's consent when they were having account trouble.

Bare in mind these are the ideas of someone who hasn't even the slightest clue about any of this. So when you say it's essentially dead and just on life support, I believe you (but don't understand how or why), but the history is as important to me as anyone here and if I think there's some off-chance of getting it saved, that would be the absolute ideal option. We had 11 years and over a million posts that were great to go back and revisit. J-Mac's nose debacle, Tanner's fuckery, random chat jam sessions, Challenge history lists, tournaments, MOTW, Palme d'Horror, etc... The thought of all that being wiped away is a shitty thing. But apparently saving the history is next to impossible. From my point of view, I want the last decision we make to be moving forward without the history, and if we've exercised every possible option, then I guess we have no choice.

It is data, so it can be saved. It is already saved. If I was making the decisions, I would put every ounce of energy and resources into moving forward. It is not that it is impossible, it is that it is not worth the opportunity cost. It has been months and I know for certain I cannot fix it. Every idea to fix it has really been nothing more than a hope and a prayer (some guy I know...). I can't, in good conscience, allow the stuff that is supposed to be private go to some person who is just going to poke around. There could be conversations, photos, passwords, and who knows what there.

Ok, time to reconvene and see what we found. Like Dream, I've found that phpBB certainly seemed easy enough to use and operate, and has enough "stuff" to keep someone like myself busy. So that seems to work just fine as far as I am concerned.
When it comes to hosting, the UK websites also list things like HostGator (bad reviews) eHost, as well as stuff like iPage, One.com and a few others. Unsure if that is the same as the ones you guys found, would imagine that if its a UK one we would struggle a bit more to run it as an admin collective as I'd be the only person who was resident, so I suggest going with a US version. iPage says unlimited bandwidth and storage size, so then size wouldn't be an issue. Trying to navigate around content and ToS stuff to see if I can understand more.

OK, the good news is that most of these places have chat/support that you can ask before signing up. 2 out of 2 have now said that profanity and nude images would result in the site being removed/suspended, so they're a no go. But at least they are being honest and up front about it. *Sigh* this is hard work, eh?

Trying a third one (eHost) which says it allows adult sites etc, so in theory that should be better? I think... Chatting now.
From what I can tell, they don't activel monitor content, and would not seek to impose anything particular. But they do have a "Get out of jail free" card saying that they can refuse right of service to anyone for whatever reason at any time...
I doubt that can be mitigated though.

phpBB seems to have all of the admin style functions as HMF did, from what I can tell, and a fair bit of customization. The one thing I don't know how to do is edit the look of the site, but i'd imagine that HAS to be doable, even if just to change the colour schemes etc, so it certainly seems a feasible way to set stuff up. Anyone else tried it?

From the research I have done and what you and Dream have said here, phpBB seems like the most viable to at least try. Foo could come in and blow it off the handles but we have to at least try. Again, we hate it, we move to another.

Again, we hate it, we move to another. The advantage of phpBB is that we don't need to put a lot of money into that aspect of it. It's free. So a good place to start. I think we need to think about how we want the forum structured. So many people use the recent tab and mainly random chat and general, I wonder if we can start without the massive plethora of sub-boards. Seems we may look slicker without it.

I'm still advocating for restoring history. Not going to happen. It's dead and gone. It had a great run but it is officially dead now. We've tried and it just isn't doable.

I'm still advocating for restoring history. I'm all for it. Even if you or someone you find can bring it back, it's not the future though. We can't go back to the HMF as we know it. That board and Globat are not the way.

That board and Globat are not the way. I thought Foo made a more salient point about restoring old HMF, which is that the people who do it might then have access to all PMs. Be a bit shit really.
