I'm strongly considering starting up a gaming channel on utubes. Could make money through ad revenue and/or a private patreon account. The influx of money from my new job that I should be starting soon will help with the financials of getting shit started. There are a few dozen games that I replay sporadically over the years and I figured I'd hold off on them and play them on youtube once I get all the equipment I need. Problem is, I barely know how to hook up a system, let alone record gameplay and audio

Don't waste your time. Silly crowded market space. Low reward.

Probably accurate. At least you dinks would get to hear me drunkenly spewing random comments as I conquer Contra and shit.

If you're trying to make money from it, it's going to be more hassle than it's worth.

which would be the goal though? Hobby gaming or trying to earn some money? It's one of those things that if you get into it for the fun of it and happen to earn some money on the side, cool, but if you're getting into it to try and support your hobby, it's probably going to crash horribly.

another thing to consider is whether or not people like listening to you and if you are able to play through a game and give witty and clever real time reactions.
A nice voice helps, like I watch some youtubers less for their games and more for their voice, and others I would love to watch them play games but their voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me and I just can't do it.

Yeah, I've considered that. A gaming channel isn't very unique for youtube, but I had the idea of uploading two videos with and without commentary. Some dudes just want to see a walkthrough without listening to the guy blabbing. Uploading the same video twice and cutting out the commentary audio on one of them was always the plan.

If it's more about having fun replaying games you love with the occasional money coming in, I see no good reason not to do it. My brother has a channel where he plays games, although it's not monetized. If it's something you want to do, why not?

Lack of technological knowledge is the main setback at this point.

Lack of technological knowledge is the main setback at this point. I do know if it's that much of a learning curve. FRAPS and Windows' Video Maker seem to be the only two things you need at the base, though a good microphone might be required later on for better-sounding commentary.

Belay that: that's specifically for PC gaming. For console games, there is much more too it.

Most people want to go right to the part they are stuck on rather than watching a whole walkthrough of the game. You basically have a series of videos for each game and break it up as the game is broken up (for resident evil, for example, you could have videos for Jill's part and Chris' part, you have the main mansion, the courtyard, gearing up for the major bosses, herb, ink ribbon, ammo locations, solving specific puzzles or using specific keys, etc.) Speedruns usually get some notice, but only if it's really impressive. Game videos are difficult

Lack of technological knowledge is the main setback at this point. a computer, a video capture program, a way to hook your console up to your computer to record it, a good mic if you want to do commentary, and editing software is all I'm aware of you needing, most of that stuff you hook it up once and then just run the programs.

Game videos are difficult That's the idea. Games like Contra would get one video and be like 20-30 minutes. Level-based platformers like Banjo-Kazooie or Conker would get separated by level.

If there's a will there's a way, I guess. I did manage to gather enough knowledge of proboards coding to essentially recreate the HMF look here. Hopefully the gaming tech isn't any more difficult.

Belay that: that's specifically for PC gaming. For console games, there is much more too it. Because they don't want to share their tech.
