I miss any argument with Fooskey. I think his fading interest in sports coupled with the food truck biz is what did it. I mean, we get arguments with Fooskey in the politics board daily, but he and I are in agreement 99.99% of the time. It is tough. I think business most of the day. Getting engaged is also a factor. Football changed fundamentally as a sport and I cannot get past the long term consequences for so many players I cheer. For me, the quality of the game has taken a drastic dip and my enjoyment level gets lower and lower every year. Baseball has become my favorite sport.

Me and my coworkers had a good conversation about our feelings about the NFL and just about everyone said the love for NFL football had lessened recently. Over saturation, greed and rule changes were the most common reasons. We almost all agreed that we hate Thursday night football. I started out more of a MLB fan and I'm getting close to being that way again.

It's still an amazing sport to watch.

I'm leaning 80% that I'll be going to a Rockies-Dodgers game in L.A. next month. Would be my first MLB game in 20 years and only my 3rd ever. Both times were the Rockies and Angels about a year or two apart and they split wins.

And I liked Thursday Night Football when it was once a year. Every week? That shit doesn't fly.

I think if you took away the peripheral stuff like fantasy football, gambling, and the social aspects of the game (tailgating, workplace conversation, family tradition) it would quickly turn into a niche sport. The on field product is not that great, rules are difficult to understand, and it is hardly the same game as it was just a few years ago.

The NFL is so far behind the NBA in marketing/fan relations/broad appeal at this point. The NFL also understands so many people will watch no matter what. But they don't seem aware there is always a breaking point.
The NFL is probably beyond the point of regaining their public good will too.

As far as the product on the field goes, here is my theory on the decline the last 2-3 years:
1. Offensive line play has taken a nosedive. It will be a long time before that shifts the other way. Pass rushers represent the largest talent pool in football, everyone has at least a couple really good ones. And run blocking fundamentals are at an all time low because of college spread offenses and OTA cut downs. That time the CBA cut was critical for O-lines' chemistry.
2. The defensive back personnel around the league is finally at a point where it can cover the entire field against these passing offenses. Most teams have 2-3 solid corners and DCs have better utilized matchup guys like LB/S hybrids in coverage.
With offensive lines unable to hold up and receivers not getting separation on plays they used to have the advantage, the quality is uglier right now.

So what does Cincinnati do about the interior d-line now that Geno Atkins was traded to Pittsburgh?
