That is exactly what makes Champ the greatest corner ever. If you can find film, you will notice that Champ reads the QB on every play, even as he's descending into coverage downfield. I have seen Champ break coverage on so many balls to come in and intercept a slant pass in the middle of the field. The dude was a brilliant football player. It was known back then that QBs didn't even look Champ's way most of the game. I watched Champ in, I think, 2010 completely ignore his assignment and rush the quarterback from the blind side and get a sack that wasn't even designed for him to run. Of course the QB didn't see him (lol). He is a pretty distant #1 corner, imo. He could literally do it all, and was great at every single aspect. Imagine how many picks a guy like Aqib Talib gets if he was given the freedom Champ was. Talib is the best playmaking DB of his era but playing like 80% man limits your turnover opportunities. I doubt Talib's decision making with multiple responsibilities would yield the results Champ's did. We have the deepest DB in the NFL without a doubt, so it's not even really worth the risk. A shame Champ missed out on a defense like this. I can't even imagine a prime Champ Bailey on this team. Holy fuck.

He has rare instincts like Champ did.

Ed Reed could come up and destroy your RB in the hole and then on the next play sprint 30 yards across the field to intercept a deep pass and take it to the house.
In the 2000s, for me it's Brady, Manning, then Reed.

Baring injury, any players that you guys were ecstatic about drafting and they didn't pan out? My biggest letdown is probably Peter Warwick. Best college receiver I ever watched (at the time). He had flashes of brilliance with the Bengals, but was a huge letdown for me. He wasn't a horrible player, just not that good. We had horrible teams during his tenure. Jermaine Gresham was a let down too. I remember on draft day calling my best friend (who is a huge Bengals fan) and screaming into the phone that if we didn't draft him, I was done with the Bengals. He actually was a really good all around tight end. But, after a couple of years, he dropped so many 3rd down passes and had so many penalties that took back 1st downs. The Bengals have had a lot of players I was excited about and their careers were ruined with injuries. Dennis Weathersby (secondary) was one that really bothered me. Totally not his fault. But, I said at the time he would be one of the best picks we ever made. Never made the field.

His intelligence reading QBs has always been elite too. Just inconsistency and off the field bullshit have prevented a complete Hall of Fame career. The last two years, he's been the best corner in the game.

Ronnie Lott, B-Dawk and Steve Atwater. I don't have a #1 safety. Lott's the only safety close to Reed but imo it isn't even that close. Ed Reed was the perfect safety. Did everything at the highest possible level. Atwater and Dawkins weren't as complete of players. Co-signed.

Back then we used to pick guys coming off bad injuries all the time, and it rarely panned out. Also tricked myself into thinking Montee Ball would be a stud. Not sure what penitentiary he's in at the moment.

The minute I was beginning to buy in on McDaniels is the exact minute we started looking like total shit. I'm glad he took his cheating ways back to Boston.

Not one player respected that piece of shit. Foo was a big fan and was convinced it was a bad move when we canned him.
