Select your big three.
1, 3. Can't decide if 2 or 4 should take the 3rd spot... Leaning 2.

Went
1) A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 2) A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors 3) A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.
Though I think 4 is when the series starts going downhill, I do consistently enjoy it more than the second one (though I do like the second one), as the second one's so off-the-wall.

Also, as much as I enjoy the final 25-ish minutes of New Nightmare, along with the occasional scene beforehand, I've come to think that New Nightmare isn't as good as I remember it being. It's a shame, as it had potential to bring new life into the series, but there it is.

I went 1, 2, 4. Why 4 over 3? Eh, I really like the character Alice, over Kristen. Plus Freddy's voice isn't annoyingly inconsistent as it is in III. But I'm just splitting hairs, 3 is still awesome I know 3 is gonna get a lot of support anyway.

I actually think the final 25 minutes or so of New Nightmare is so awful it hurts the movie pretty far for me. Awful FX, terrible trite music, and I hated the Hansel/Gretel parallels. The slow-mo shots of Nancy are pretty laughable too. Shame, that first hour is incredibly brilliant.

The only think I don't dig about 2 is the bird scene. Should've just been cut all together. Best tone of the entire series, and I love the "subtext" of Freddy exploiting Jessie's possible sexuality. Best face-makeup of the series imo, too.
As much crap as people try to give the pool party scene (Freddy can't appear in real life! goes against the first movie! Lets ignore that Nancy pulled him into real life in the first movie to prove our point!), I think it's fucking awesome. Filled with some of my favorite Freddy lines "Help yourself, FUCKER!" and "You are all my children now" over Chris Young's awesome score. Near excellent under-appreciated sequel.
I even like the possibility that the coach was going to rape Jessie, but Freddy was having none of that shit.

The "You are all my children now," along with the imagery of that scene, is my favorite scene from the series. Great lines and fun.

Yeah...Alice is actually my favorite of the lead girls in the series (even with the woeful Dream Child).

I must agree with what you have said. The first hour is off the fuckin' chain. I don't hate the ending scenes as much as you, but it totally doesn't match the first 60 minutes or so.

However, I always had a boner for Patricia Arquette. Alice was great. But she would be my third. The series did have great leading ladies.

I never felt the buzz for Nancy. Patricia's Kristen is definitely the most boner-ific though, no way to argue that.
