No. Film had every advantage for 60+ years, TV was the one that needed to catch up for so long. Now that TV shows are made with the same scrutiny and attention to detail once exclusive to movies, pretty tough for the pendulum to swing the other way. There's just so much more you can do with a TV show without the constraints of a 1.5-3 hour time frame. Peak TV will be on top for the foreseeable future.

The only movies more anticipated than new seasons of Game of Thrones would be the Star Wars movies in all likelihood.

Also says a lot that Scorsese is making a gangster movie with DeNiro, Pacino, Pesci and Keitel to go straight to Netflix. Movies may not be dead, but the movie theater experience might be...

i've never seen an episode of game of thrones. i'm more optimistic about the state of movies than you are, apparently. i'm not hoping for downturn to tv either. one doesn't have to doom the other.

Look no further than the massacre at espn to see where tv is going. The new generation basically expects content for free or cheap. I believe as the model changes, we will see a huge dip in quality as competition is forced out or consumed by larger entities.

ESPN is hurt by general cord cutting and the sports packages they have to overpay for to stay relevant in the internet/social media age.

if the consumer / viewer wants content for free or cheap, then how do things like kickstarter or patreon yield any success at all? i think you're trying to push the blame where it doesn't belong.

if you guys don't think there is still passion in filmmaking, that's pretty ridiculous. but the emoji movie does look like garbage. There is that rare flick maybe once or twice a year that looks like people legitimately cared about the quality of their film. The Revenant, etc... Look in the theater, what do you see? I check my local theater with 16 screens, yet, only 5-7 movies are usually playing. A super hero movie always, taking up about 4 screens, at least. An all spanish movie is always playing on at least one screen. 2 or 3 animated kids movies that linger there for months, but still doesn't linger as long as whatever superhero flick is showing at the time. A Seth Rogen or Amy Schumer flick that I will never in my life care to watch, and another filler movie that just doesn't generate any interest out of me whatsoever. They're all cash grabs, with no variety.

(the last movie i saw in theaters was the dark knight rises, i think) but to say that people don't still have passion for making movies, because you happen to not like what you're seeing in the theaters is kind of crap. and if you don't like the direction, stop supporting it. if enough people don't like that direction and stop supporting it, it will change.

if you're talking about in theaters, it's going to look like everything is just a cash grab, because they have to appeal to as large a number of people as they can. but there is passion and risk taking to be found even with animated movies or tent pole blockbuster movies.

No cash grabs at A24 and their hit rate is extremely high.

How many kickstarter movies have you seen completed? We are seeing this all over society. Airlines, food, video games, movies, etc. People expect something for nothing. The struggle for revenues is turning everything into a great big commercial where service is total shit. Netflix and Amazon survive on the backs of others. When their bloat breaks those backs, expect a dramatic lowering of quality.
