I have a friend who is quite good with computers. I want his take on this prior to coming up with an opinion. From the little I understand, though, it seems a pretty fair deal. I want his opinion before I come up with an opinion

the only other catch, really, is the risk of the community support going away as they are volunteers. Then we would be pretty much in the same boat. and we are at the mercy of the community there for support, if no one has an answer to our problem, we're fucked Mercy of the community? That sounds worse than being Globat's bitch.

HMF only costs a couple hundred per year. Like D said, the time and effort is the issue. I have trouble believing our history will ever come back. I think creating something new and sustainable is a better use of resources, rather than trying to migrate the old data to a new platform. I own and run a business so I fully understand what it's like to not have time to deal with something like this. However, I'd like to help I've been offering for awhile now. my web designer could have taken care of this problem Now I agree with you. I see this as an opportunity to give HMF a good facelift. Something new to fit with the 2010's and new era we're in.

I'm going through trucking school this month and should have decent income by mid-late Summer. If it CAN wait, I'd be happy to pay it, and Laz also seems happy to contribute. But I haven't the slightest idea about whether or not there is a time limit on when we can upgrade the code. Will the history be sitting in there forever unless we upgrade or will it eventually disappear? I'm just not sure. My first option will always be to save the history. If it's not possible, then we can start fresh. But it would help to understand how all this works, and I am a lost cause. Money isn't an issue for me, it's time. I'm in the same boat as Foo. I'm working non stop, having a new home built and dealing with life issues. So time is in short supply.

I'm with Foo in that I don't think a merger/migration is a great idea, as the Dodo analogy seems apt, and do we really want to continue carrying around the baggage? I'd pay good money to be able to just read the old board, but I would think it would have to be restored to operational for that. And no to Dream doing any merging/coding... www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx1RjjWXSwQ

I feel that we could save a lot of time & resources just letting that idea go and moving forward with something new.

The way the old posts are stored is a lot like algebra. The interface just makes them pretty and shuffles them in a desired way.
All the posts are still in a database. But they are all simply assigned a number. Unless we are paying for a recreation of the framework of wowbb, it is most likely not worth it. It would be like paying for someone to hand build a 2003 Toyota Camry.
The worst part is that, at best, it would likely carry some of the same security flaws as the old board, and at worst become unusable without constant support.

At this point I'm not opposed to it. Though Jiggy brings up a good point, the old site has our Challenge lists. I'd hate to rewatch a shitty movie I forgot I watched in October I did find a site that claims they can do conversions but it's costly (somewhere between 300 and 500 or so to convert our board, based on my guesses as far as posts and users go. ) Fundraiser time!! I do hate the thought of losing the Challenge Lists

I do hate the thought of losing the Challenge Lists I found another site where we can do it for free. Just need someone who can do it (was gonna ask Mark to do it as he's computer savvy) but some were against even trying it and I won't ask him to do it unless everyone's cool with trying.

Aside from wasted time, is there any harm in trying that you're aware of? I understand to some it may not be a priority, but if there's a realistic possibility with no drawbacks, I can't imagine any members absolutely forbidding trying.

So long as a backup is made we won't really lose anything but time.

I think 11 straight years of recorded history is more important than the damn challenge lists. This is like a journal for most of us.
