Solid list, though surprised to see Return to Horror High there. I mean, I liked it, but I don't think it'd break into my top 25, let alone top ten.

1. Friday the 13th part 4 ( the perfect slasher) 2. Bay of Blood (proto-slasher: the template of the genre) 3. Halloween (kicked off the golden age of slashers) 4. Maniac (never have we gone do deep into the slasher mind) 5. The Burning (that amazing raft sequence and ahead of its time makeup for killer) 6. Madman (practically a companion piece to The Burning) 7. Alone in the Dark (when character actors attack!!!) 8. Bloody Birthday (great killer kids slasher) 9. Friday the 13th part 3. (Fundamentally sound, and one of the best looking slashers of the era) 10. Return to Horror High (high concept for its time) sleepaway camp didn't make your list? that's discouraging...

Which so-called "best ones" am I missing, pray tell? Admittedly, I'm more likely to make two top 25 lists (divide early slashers and newer slashers) than make one Top 50, but true, I can't make an ultimate list, given the fact there's a lot of movies I've yet to see. final exam should make a top 25 early slashers, as one example. (unless you include a bunch of sequels too, then all bets are off...) Final Exam shouldn't be on any top Slasher list. No matter the criteria.

It is flawed for sure, but the concept was like a decade ahead of its time. That slot could have went with a dozen more basic slashers, but I wanted to highlight originality.

I started considering it around number 5. Ultimately it would get honorable mention. The ending is amazing, but it was also at a time when the shock ending was expected and I don't think the rest of the movie is quite strong enough. It also pained me to put it on my list because Sleepaway Camp 2 is actually my favorite in that series. I have a similar issue with the NOES. Part 3 is my favorite in that series, which makes it tough to put the original on lists.

Also, notably absent from my list are many films widely called slashers that I consider to be Fish Out Of Water horror.

Oh sure, NOES 3 and NOES were both on the bubble. 3 is just a hair ahead for me. NOES is almost the reverse of Sleepaway Camp, a super strong movie deflated a bit by a bad ending.

The whole thing is horrible though. I don't blame the studio, as terrible endings to otherwise good shit is like Wes Cravens calling card. the last ten minutes of his movies all become either scooby doo or MacGyver.

Friday III is underrated. Would likely make my top ten slasher.

Yeah, but keep in mind, she made all of those traps, along with putting her drunk mother to bed, and fell asleep all within something like 15 minutes or so. I always thought that time-frame was a bit iffy.

Everything. The whole end became a cluster fuck of random shit. Bring him into the real world, booby traps, then rendering him powerless by ignoring him, and then the tacked on endings. At the point where Nancy made him flesh and blood, ignoring him made no sense at all.
